Price Rises Fuel Winter Energy Concerns for families

Consumers urged to be Energy Smart by industry watchdog

The cost of heating our homes is rising, which is prompting fears that many less well off households could be thrown into fuel poverty this winter. Gas and electricity price rises at the end of last year resulted in calls to energywatch, the independent watchdog for the gas and electricity industries, rising by 40% in one day and now the organisation is urging people to make the changes that will save them money and energy - welcome news indeed to many low income households following the festive period.

Approximately 50% of consumers have never switched supplier which means they may be paying up to £100 per year more for their gas and electricity. Prepayment consumers could save up to £50 a year if they switched to paying by direct debit. Consumers who pay by cash/cheque can save up to £20 per year.

To switch supplier you first need to check out best prices.

The easiest way to do this is to contact energylinx on 0845 225 2840 or log on to www.energylinx.co.uk.

Consumers can make considerable savings by being more energy efficient. Simple measures such as defrosting the freezer regularly, using energy saving light bulbs and turning off radiators in rooms that aren't being used are just some of the actions that can make a difference.

EDF Energy increase standard energy prices

EDF Energy has announced an increase to their standard gas and electricity prices across all three brands, London Energy, SWEB Energy and Seeboard Energy. The latest price increase takes effect from January 17. The average price increase for domestic customers on one of their standard tariffs is 5.4 per cent for electricity and 8.1 per cent for gas

Vincent de Rivaz, Chief Executive of EDF Energy, said: World Energy prices continue to drive up our costs. Our industry has talked about what it can do to help ease the impact of rising prices of those most in need. The time for talking is over, action is required and EDF Energy has decided to take the lead on this.

In parallel, EDF Energy is offering to suspend the price increase until at least 31 March 2006 for its 250,000 customers most in need and have introduced a capped rate tariff, available for an average premium of 50 pence per week. This capped rate is open to the first 100,000 residential customers who apply before the end of March and will result in their tariff being capped until 31st March 2007.

Although this is the first of the main energy supplier prices hikes of 2005, EDF Energy had been in the enviable position of having one of the lowest cumulative price increase of any supplier during 2004.
