An alliance between Greenpeace and energy supplier npower was forged to provide a pioneering 'clean' electricity product to customers, as a practical solution to help tackle global warming. It is the first time Greenpeace and an energy company have worked together to market a consumer energy product. Their product is aptly named Juice.
'Juice', the renewable electricity product announced on the 1st August 2001
enables 50,000 domestic electricity customers to receive their electricity
from clearly identified, entirely renewable sources at the same cost as any
other npower customer. Unlike many other green products on the market, Juice
does not carry a premium price.
Juice will allow residential customers anywhere in the UK the opportunity to
purchase clean electricity generated by the wind at sea. Since 2003, Juice
has been sourced from the North Hoyle Offshore Wind Farm which was built
seven kilometres off the coast of North Wales by National Wind Power, npower's
sister company.
Matthew Spencer, head of Greenpeace's climate campaign said at the time: "When
we hear about ice caps melting and floods increasing it's easy to think that
global warming is too big a problem to tackle. Juice offers hope by giving
individuals a simple and effective way of doing their bit to fight climate
change through their electricity bill. Now you can get climate friendly electricity,
and send a clear signal to the government that you want to see the UK renewable
energy industry grow."
npower and National Wind Power are both owned by leading energy company Innogy,
which has been at the forefront of developing alternative energy sources in
the UK . npower intends to lead the way in clean energy for UK customers, boosting
public support for new standards in renewable energy.
