Energywatch

Energywatch is the UK 's independent gas and electricity consumer watchdog set up by government to help protect the interests of the UK domestic electricity and gas consumer.

Energywatch is completely separate from Ofgem, the gas and electricity regulator and Energylinx, the home energy price comparison. However, the three organizations work to help promote the interests of domestic consumers within the UK gas and electricity industry.

Energywatch has a specific remit which is detailed in the Utilities Act (2000)

Energywatch functions

• The function of making proposals or providing advice and information about consumer matters and representing the views of consumers on such matters
• The function of giving advice and information to Ministers, regulatory authorities (particularly Ofgem); licence holders, and any other body whose activities may affect the interests of consumers such as local authorities.

Energywatch duties

• A duty to investigate and seek to resolve consumer complaints against companies about regulated matters;
• A duty to publish information on: the performance of licenced gas and electricity companies against statutory service standards set by Ofgem;
• A duty to publish complaints made against energy suppliers, transporters, distributors (or their agents) both directly to energywatch and also to the relevant licensee;
• A specific duty to 'have regard' to the interests of:
• Individuals who are disabled or chronically sick
• Individuals of pensionable age
• Individuals with low-incomes
• Individuals residing in rural areas
• A duty to comply with notices requiring it to perform duties of a financial nature
