Energy prices depend on what area of the UK you live. From a pricing viewpoint the UK is divided into 14 separate distribution areas:

The price you will pay for electricity depends firstly on what area your property is located

You need to select what energy supplier currently supplies your home with gas.

Once you select which supplier another drop-down menu will display, this relates to the tariff (or price plan) that you are currently supplied with.

Each supplier has many different price plans, so when doing the comparison do insert the correct tariff as that will allow us to provide the most accurate advice.

If you do not know what tariff you are on, simply select “Standard”.

To allow us to carry out the comparison we need to know how much gas your use in your home.

The best and most accurate way will be to enter the number of kWhs per year, this information can be obtained from looking at the last four electricity bills or calling your existing gas supplier and asking them.

If you don’t have access to this information then you can enter your monthly or quarterly spend or even the number of bedrooms in your home.

Do bear in mind that the more accurate information you can provide at this stage allows us to prepare a more accurate comparison.

There are various methods to pay your energy bills:

Monthly Direct Debit
The cheapest way in which to pay an energy account. The supplier will calculate a monthly figure that will be taken from your bank account on the same date every month. This figure is calculated so that you are paying for your estimated energy spend equally over a 12 month period.

Quarterly Direct Debit
This is sometimes called variable direct debit. The supplier will send you a bill each quarter and within a period (usually 10 - 14 days) this will be automatically deducted from your bank account.

Quarterly Cash/Cheque
The supplier will send you a bill each quarter and within a period (usually 10 - 14 days) you will be expected to pay this by cash or cheque, either directly to the supplier or at a bank or post-office. Often suppliers will offer prompt payment discounts on these type of payments.

Prepayment Meter
If you wish to pay in advance for your energy then you can have a prepayment meter fitted. In order to buy gas or electricity you'll be given a payment card or key, which can be topped up at a designated payment agent. Prepayment tariffs are generally more expensive than other payment methods.

All tariffs available to me
This will show you every single tariff available to your home, it includes online accounts, capped and fixed price tariffs and renewable energy tariffs. Basically everything available to your home, sorted by least cost and highest savings to you.

All tariffs excluding online tariffs
This will show you every single tariff available to your home, barring online accounts. Online accounts are more often the cheapest option but some customers may prefer not to have an online account.

Only capped and fixed price tariffs - sorted by best price
These type of accounts allow you to budget better as energy costs will not rise in the period the cap or fix applies. With a Fixed Price Tariff energy prices remain the same of the period of the Fix and with Capped Price Tariffs basically energy prices can decrease but they cannot increase.

Some of these tariffs may have penalty payments should you leave before the end of the cap or fix – these are not necessarily a bad thing, so long as you know about these upfront. When looking at the results pages all will become clear, you will see the cheapest cap or fixed tariff at the top of the results.

Only capped and fixed price tariffs - sorted by longest cap or fix
These type of accounts allow you to budget better as energy costs will not rise in the period the cap or fix applies. With a Fixed Price Tariff energy prices remain the same of the period of the Fix and with Capped Price Tariffs basically energy prices can decrease but they cannot increase.

Some of these tariffs may have penalty payments should you leave before the end of the cap or fix – these are not necessarily a bad thing, so long as you know about these upfront. The results are listed by the ordering them in terms of the longest available cap or fix.

Only online tariffs
These accounts are only available to sign up online with a valid email address. The main difference with these type of accounts is the in the majority of cases you will not receive a bill or quarterly statement by post. Instead you will be emailed details of where you can view and print your bill.

Online/Internet Only Tariffs, when paid by monthly direct debit tend to be the cheapest option available to you.
